Horse and Art Research Program (HARP)

The Horse and Art Research Program (HARP) operates in the Balaton Uplands in Hungary, attracting artists from around the world who are interested in horses. Since its foundation in 2015, nearly seventy international artists have participated in the program, creating works across almost every artistic medium, including painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, performance, film, video, photography, text, dance, music, and literature.

Over the years, HARP has become a gathering place and meeting point for artists who explore equestrian culture, the various approaches to horse-human relationships, symbolism, and historical investigations. Artists such as Julie Sleaford, who in her book "The Problem Horse & Other Stories" poetically depicts horses, sometimes with mysterious female figures, and Onongua Enkhtur, who processes Mongolian equestrian nomadic traditions using natural materials and various contemporary techniques, as well as Solweig von Kleist, who creates experimental animations with hand-painted, drawn, and scratched miniatures on film material to tell stories.

Numerous other exciting works and joint improvisations and performances by international artists such as Angela Han, Anouk van Hooydonk, Claire Brandt, Desiree Meijer, Emma O’Kane, Ekaterina Vanovskaya, James Keay-Bright, Jitendra Baoni, Kaori Kodama, Kim Kwaaitaal, Laura Merz, Leah Kronenfeld, Lee Deigaard, Louise Taylor, Marine Lahaix, Mark Ritchie, Murao Fumi, Natalie Hill, Sossa Jorgensen, Yoko Ichikawa, and many others have also been showcased.
